Shades of Yoga: My Yoga Teacher Training Experience in Ubud, Bali

After a whirlwind couple of months, I am finally ready to share what I was up to after teaching English in Korea! Once my teaching contract ended, I packed my bags and flew over to Ubud, Bali to embark on a new journey. I registered with Shades of Yoga to complete my first ever yoga teacher training! Not only that, but I had the honor as serving as their influencer to help with marketing for the month! Throughout all of the training I was charged with capturing the essence of the school by creating videos, taking photos for social media as well as writing blogs for the Shades of Yoga website.

Why Shades of Yoga?

My search for a yoga teacher training began very broadly as I was looking into any accredited program that offered the first level of training, an RYT 200 level certification. Ubud literally translates to "medicine" and is the source for spiritual inspiration. So what better place to embark on a journey of self-discovery? Once I decided on Bali as my top destination, the choice to go with Shades of Yoga was very simple to make. It came down to a few important factors; location, class size, the course offerings, and longevity of the school in the yoga world.

Day in the Life at Shades of Yoga: What a Day-to-Day in Yoga Teacher Training is Like

Enroll in a yoga teacher training course if you're looking for a little discipline in your life! Throughout the entire month we could always count on an intensive and consistent class structure day-in and day-out. Class are held Monday through Saturday for the entire month, so plan on arriving a few days before the course or a few days after if you're hoping to explore!

7:25 - 8:30am: Noble Silence, Meditation, Pranayama

Each day began with a practice of noble silence to keep our senses inward, this meant avoiding distractions such as checking our phones, reading, or speaking with others throughout the morning. The morning consisted of a 30-minute unguided meditation, followed by 30-minute pranayama breathing exercises.

8:30 - 10:00am: Morning Asana Practice

We wake up our bodies each morning with a vinyasa flow, and sometimes we're treated with a rejuvenating flow.

10:00-11:00am: Breakfast

Time for the most important meal of the day! While working up a sweat we also worked up an appetite just in time for a nice buffet breakfast on-location at the beautiful Taksu Spa. The generous spread is included in the cost of your tuition.

11:00am - 12:30pm ~ 1:00pm: Morning Lecture

After nourishing our bodies, it's time to nourish the mind and soul with philosophy discussions. Sometimes we would also take time for posture clinics or self-practices.

12:30~1:00pm - 2:30 ~3:00pm: Lunch Break!

We're free to hit the busy streets of Ubud to grab some lunch, shop around, get a spa treatment, or even hurry back to our homestay for a nap!

3:00pm - 4:00pm: Afternoon lecture

Afternoon lectures varied from anatomy classes, posture clinics, or teaching practicum time!

4:00 - 5:30pm: Afternoon Asana Flow

At the close of each day we'd finish movement. Sometimes it was a vinyasa flow, and other times it was a much needed yin or restorative yoga practice.

Since the course is accredited by the Yoga Alliance, the 200-hour course was very comprehensive. It included everything you'd want to know as a beginner yogi and more. The course included posture clinics that focused on proper alignment, philosophy talks on the yoga sutras; yamas and niyamas; meditation; pranayama; introductions to prenatal, kid, and senior yoga; teaching practice; the art of sequencing; ayurvedic lifestyle, the chakra system; and anatomy and physiology. Also included in your tuition was a welcome package, access to discounts for any Taksu Spa services, a field trip to Tirta Empul water temple, and a graduation ceremony!

Training in the Yoga Shala at Taksu Spa : Why I Loved The Venue

One of my favorite parts of the training was the fact that we got to practice in the beautiful jungle grounds of Taksu Spa. Our yoga shala was a safe space, it was a cozy place that protected us from the elements, yet always allowed the nurturing parts of nature to seep in. Imagine yourself deep in meditation feeling the light breeze listening to the sounds of birds, the calming sound of the waterfall at the edge, and the low hum of Ubudians commuting to work on their motorbikes. This beautiful spa is tucked away from all of the chaos of Ubud, yet is easily accessible by foot. You will the greatest staff waiting to welcome you with open arms and wide smalls. Taksu offers an array of spa services, dining options, and even group fitness classes if you're still yearning for movement after class!

Exploring Bali: Bustling Ubud

There is no shortage of fun things to see and do in Ubud, let alone the rest of beautiful Bali! The great thing about Ubud is that many places are a short walk or even faster motor scooter ride away! In Ubud alone you'll find the famous market, the wildly amusing Monkey Forest, Campuhan ridge walk, tons of spiritual shops, endless rice fields, restaurants catering to every palette, and more.

Did I Feel Prepared to Teach After Graduating from Shades of Yoga?

I'm happy to report that yes, after a month of intensive training (nerves aside) I did feel ready to teach my own class! During the course you are giving ample opportunities for teaching practice, and you begin teaching as early as week 1! You will get to see what it feels like to create your own self-practice sequence, teach private one-on-one sessions, as well as small groups. Aside from teaching yoga, you also get exposure to teaching pranayama breathing techniques. I found a teaching position a month after my training ended!

Should Only People Interested in Teaching Yoga Complete a Yoga Teacher Training?

If you're looking for dedicated time to turn inward, to learn more about yourself and what is it that truly calls you, then yoga teacher training is for you. If you're simply looking for a break from your fast paced life, then yoga teaching training is also for you! This course is not just for teachers it's for anyone who is hoping to add a little more mindfulness to their lives. This course gives you mindful tools you can carry with you wherever you go, and gives you tips on how to add little drops of awareness to your every day life.

What I Gained After Completing Yoga Teacher Training with Shades of Yoga

I've gained so much than I'll ever be able to describe in a single paragraph, so here it is in a nutshell. Aside from the ability to teach, I've gained a stronger sense of confidence, self-reliance, self-trust, and have found ways to manage the river of anxious thoughts that would run through my mind. I've gained the ability to slow down, and just breathe. I've gained beautiful friendships and connections with the Balinese and fellow yogis. I've strengthened my ability to follow my intuition, and put fear in it's place. I've learned that the ego though necessary, will also try really hard to keep you in your comfort zone. I've learned how read energy in a room, and how to influence that energy positively as a teacher. I've learned that no matter where we all come from, we are all seeking the same basic things in life, and that the world would be a better place if we remembered this.

Overall Rating: Would I Recommend Shades of Yoga to a Friend?

My month in Bali was truly a transformational experience. I met incredible people that I became so close with during the course. The instructor Charlotte was so knowledgeable and compassionate. The staff and spa services were phenomenal at Taksu Spa, and Bali itself is amazing.
